Siraj comes forward to protect democracy, constitution in prevailing situation in country

ISLAMABAD, (SANA): Ameer Jamat-e-Islami (JI) Sirajul Haq has come forward to protect democracy and constitution in the prevailing situation in the country. He started meeting with the leaders of different political parties. Sirajul Haq also had meeting with the Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif.

Ameer Jamat-e-Islami, Sirajul Haq had meeting with the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly, Syed Khursheed Shah and former federal minister for information and broadcasting, Qamar Zaman Kaira at the parliament house in Islamabad on Wednesday.

After the meeting, in a joint press conference, Sirajul Haq and Khursheed Shah said that they want to play a role in lowering the temperatures that have developed over the past few weeks into the current situation.

“We are in agreement that the constitution and democracy should remain intact,” Khursheed Shah said.

The PPP leader said he is in contact with members of the government and will also contact Imran Khan to encourage a dialogue between the two sides.

“Secretary General JI Liaquat Baloch and Sirajul Haq will talk to Imran today. We will also contact other political parties to alleviate the situation,” he said.

In response to a question, Khursheed Shah said that Asif Ali Zardari is concerned about the sustenance of democracy in the country and wants the government to complete its tenure.

On the occasion, Sirajul Haq said that the meeting discussed both Imran’s proposed August 14 march as well as the government’s attitude around it. “We plan to meet Imran Khan to discuss the situation,” he added.

He also said that resignations will not resolve any issue and that tension between these political parties will only benefit a “third party”.

“Protests and rallies are the right of every political party. We are grateful that there is democracy in the country and every citizen enjoys this freedom,” Sirajul Haq said.

“But politics is volatile. A middle ground should be reached to resolve issues. We are meeting so the strain between the PTI and government can be eased,” he said.

Sirajul Haq also said that in a telephone call, former president and PPP leader Asif Ali Zardari had said that a situation which may bring an end to the democratic process should be avoided.

“Imran Khan has also said that he doesn’t want to derail democracy. But the situation has given way to a bottleneck. In this situation, it is the responsibility of political leaders to find a solution,” he said.

Sirajul Haq said that they should try to resolve issues instead of watching them as spectators, saying that he is hopeful that the people sitting in parliament and outside parliament will resolve the issues.

He said that Imran Khan did not want to derail democracy, saying that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has also shown desire to hold meeting with him. Sirajul Haq said that they are hopeful to defuse the situation.

Sirajul Haq said that there is always middle way in the politics, saying that democracy is not solid like iron but is soft like water and can make its way in every situation.

He expressed hope that the issues will be resolved after meeting with the Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan. He said that their mission is not to send anybody to home nor to enthrone anybody but to save the democracy from being derailed.

Siarjul Haq said that it is the responsibility of all the political parties to play their role to lessen the prevailing tension in the country.

To a question, as to whether Prime Minister will resign from premiership while giving sacrifice of his office on the demand of Imran Khan and Tahirul Qadri, Sirajul Haq said in joking mood that any sacrifice is not allowed before the ‘Eidul Bakr ‘, saying that the issue will not be resolved through resigning of anybody.

On the occasion, khurshid Shah said that they are trying to save the system. He said that confrontation can be averted through joint efforts jointly. He said resignation of anyone is not the solution of any problem. He said that they have to resolve issues through constitutional way, saying that political parties are united over the supremacy of the parliament.

Meanwhile, Sirajul Haq also had meeting with the seasoned politician, and Chief of the Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PKMAP) Mehmood Khan Achakzai, Sirajul Haq said that during the meeting with Mehmood Achakzai they talked on the supremacy of law and constitution.

Amidst the heated political climate in the days running up to Imran Khan’s August 14 long march, opposition party leaders on Wednesday appealed to the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) to reduce friction and try to come to an agreement.
