Khursheed Shah PPP dubs Article 245 enforcement as ‘mini martial law’

ISLAMABAD, (SANA): Opposition Leader in National Assembly Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah threatened to protest if Article 245 is not withdrawn in Islamabad on Tuesday. Shah said that the government has accepted its failure by imposing Article 245. He termed the imposition of Article 245 as ‘mini martial law’.

Showing strong reaction to the enforcement of Article 245 of the Constitution, Shah termed it as mini-martial law which can lead to violation of basic human rights. The government must state the threats to the capital city, Shah demanded.

The National Assembly Session was presided over by speaker of the National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq. Speaking on the floor of the National Assembly, Khursheed Shah argued against the imposition of Article 245 by saying that the use of article 245 shows the government’s weakness. He questioned whether the Army has been deployed in Islamabad to halt the Long March. Has the government failed to provide security in the Federal Capital, Shah asked?

Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has sacrificed lives of two leaders in the name of democracy, said Khursheed. He further informed that Asif Ali Zardari accepted his mistake of impositing of Article 245 in Lahore and we must learn from our past mistakes.

Khurshid Shah urged upon the prime minister to announce withdrawal of Article 245 immediately.

“Nawaz Sharif must prove that he is a democratic prime minister, in case of any threat to democracy we will fight till last drop our blood”, he said emphatically.

Khurshid Shah warned if the Article 245 was not withdrawn, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) would vehemently protest leaving all others behind.

The leader of opposition said that the article for calling the army exists in the constitution and added that his party during its tenure had also called the army in Malakand, but it was war-like situation over there and the army was called after taking the parliament into confidence.

Contrary to this, he said normal situation prevailing in Islamabad. He enquired what challenge/threat Islamabad is facing that has necessitated the enforcement of Article 245?

Khurshid Shah demanded immediate withdrawal of article 245 and added we could not support the government working under the umbrella of Article 245, withdraw it and we would fully support you.

Shah said that fundamental rights of citizens will get suspended with this decision of the government, adding his party is disturbed over the move.

He said that the government is in ‘panic’ because of the political threat posed by Dr Tahriul Qadri, adding that PPP will continue strive to save the democracy.
