Indian army would give a befitting reply to ceasefire violations along LoC: Jaitley warns Pakistan

SRINAGAR, (SANA): Indian Defence Minister Arun Jaitley has warned Pakistan that Indian army would give a befitting reply to ceasefire violations along LoC by them.

Jaitley was speaking to reporters at the Raj Bhavan here after receiving comprehensive briefing from the Army regarding prevailing security situation along the borders. “I have come here to review the overall security situation. I shall be interacting with the concerned people on this (ceasefire violations) during my stay here,” Jaitley said while replying a question on the alleged ceasefire violations by Pakistan in Jammu region. “Our Army is strong enough and well-equipped to deal with such violations,” he added.

Earlier Jaitley was received at Technical Airport by Finance Minister, Abdul Rahim Rather, Minister of State for Home, Sajad Ahmad Kichloo and senior Army officers. From Technical Airport, Jaitley was flown to Badamibagh Cantonment, Headquarters of 15 Corps. He was accompanied Chief of Army Staff, Gen Bikram Singh.

A senior Army officer told a local newspaper that Defence Minister was briefed regarding the overall security situation for more than two hours by GOC-in-C Northern Command, Lt General, D S Hooda.

“During the briefing Jaitley was briefed about the counter-infiltration and anti-militancy operations in hinterland,” the officer said adding while GOC 15 Corps briefed Jaitley about the security situation in Kashmir, GOC 14 Corps briefed Jaitley about the prevailing situation on Indo-China border in Ladakh and GOC 16 corps briefed Defence Minister about the ceasefire violations in Jammu region, he added.

Later in the day, chief minister Omar Abdullah called on the defence minister at Nehru Guest House.

An official spokesman said they discussed in detail the security scenario prevailing in the state.

“During the meeting which lasted for over an hour, the two leaders also discussed the current situation on LoC and borders. The matters relating to the preparedness of the state government to conduct Amarnathji Yatra smoothly also came up for discussion in the meeting,” he added.

Chief minister shared with Jaitley, who is also union finance minister certain critical financial matters relating to the development plan of Jammu and Kashmir.

“Aspects regarding skill development initiatives taken by the state government also came up for the discussion,” he added.

Later Omar tweeted, “Had a very productive meeting with @arunjaitley in Srinagar this afternoon. Discussed matters related to both defence & finance with him.”

Jaitley called on governor at Raj Bhawan. Governor discussed various issues relating to the rapid growth and development of the state.

An official spokesman said governor and the defence minister held discussions with Gen Bikram Singh, chief of army staff, Lt Gen D S Hooda, northern army commander and Lt Gen Gurmit Singh, GoC XV Corps regarding important matters concerning external and internal security management.
