UN commission arrives in Pak to probe BB murder

ISLAMABAD (SANA): The UN commission looking into the assassination of former prime minister Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto have arrived in Pakistan on Monday in continuation of its work aimed at identifying facts and circumstances of the 2007 tragedy.

The commission, which is headed by Chile’s UN Ambassador Heraldo Munoz, is composed of Indonesian attorney general Marzuki Darusman and Ireland’s former deputy police commissioner Peter Fitzgerald.

During his forthcoming visit to Pakistan, the commission will meet, among others, PLM-N chief Nawaz Sharif, the minister said.

The commission, which began its probe on July 1, is set to submit its report to the secretary-general sometime in December. Ban will then share the report with the Government and submit it to the Security Council for information.

The Pakistan government had requested the United Nations to establish a commission to investigate the Ms. Bhutto’s killing. It has already paid 1.8 million dollars to the U.N. as seed money to cover its initial costs, and more countries are likely to contribute.

During his address to the General Assembly on Friday, President Zardari thanked Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for constituting a commission.

“We are confident that the Commission will bring out all dimensions of her (Benazir Bhutto’s) life, work and tragic assassination,” he said.

Munoz, the chairman, has said that the commission will “contribute to justice the Pakistani authorities are seeking by identifying facts and circumstances of the assassination.”
