Mirwaiz condemns police firing at Varmul

SRINAGAR (SANA): Chairman of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has strongly condemned the police highhandedness against Kashmiris, saying that such vile tactics by the government could not suppress the ongoing freedom movement.

He has also condemned the use of indiscriminate force by the police against protesters at various places in Valley. He strongly condemned, what he called, the unjustified firing on peaceful demonstrators at Varmul and expressed deep sorrow over the killing of youth Amir Ahmad. He expressed solidarity with the bereaved family.

Police have arrested several Kashmiri liberation leaders including leaders of Hurriyat Conference (M) constituents from Raj Bagh area here and lodged them in Police Station, Raj Bagh.

The arrestees include Javid Ahmad Mir, Shahid-ul-Islam, Zaffar Akbar Bhat, Muhammad Yousuf Naqash, Shakeel-ur-Rehman, Wasim Ahmad and Yasmeen Raja. They were leading a protest rally from Hurriyat headquarter, Raj Bagh, here, and heading towards UNMOGIP office, Sonawar, to hand over a memorandum to the observer to demand immediate arrest of and punishment to culprits involved in Shopian tragedy, and an impartial probe into Varmul firing and killings. The police stopped the protesters some yards away from Hurriyat office and arrested the activists.

The protesters were raising slogans demanding identification of Shopian murderers and the arrest of and punishment to police personnel involved in killing of civilian protesters. They were also protesting against the police action against peaceful protesters at Srinagar, Islamabad, Bandipora, Sopur and other places in Valley.

Today’s protest rally was organized in accordance with the programme announced by the Majlis Mashawrat Shopian and supported by Hurriyat chairman Mirwaiz Muhammad Umar Farooq.
